Perfect Summer Nails- now with added coconut!

Summer is in full swing and my laptop has been repaired (not that I ever told you it was broken…) so bring on the blogging! I have a whole long list of blog ideas that are going to become a reality over the summer so keep your eyes on the blog!

I thought I would start off my sharing a wee review I did for my Business and Editorial Writing coursework. Barry M is one of my all time favourite brands so it only made sense to write about one of their latest releases. Apologies for my chewed nails in the first photo! Anyway- read on to find out about my latest nail obsession.

Coconut oil has recently become the go to solution for pretty much any problem imaginable. Need to fry something? Coconut oil. Frizzy hair? Coconut oil. Bad breath? Coconut oil! Yep it really can help with all of those things. Barry M have now jumped on the coconut band wagon and brought out a range of nail polishes infused with coconutty goodness.

The range currently consists of nine pastel shades perfect for the coming summer months. All of the polishes are infused with both coconut oil and coconut water to hydrate and nourish the nails while delivering a smooth gloss like manicure. The polishes are also enriched with vitamins B and C to help nail strength and give them a healthy shine.

As a serial nail biter I am constantly on the lookout for nail products that help strengthen my poor, chewed nails. But of course i also want them to look pretty and colourful because that always helps discourage nibbling. So when I saw this new range pop up on Barry M’s Instagram feed I knew straight away that I needed to pop down to Superdrug asap!

I opted to buy the summery sounding shades “Bikini” and “Laguna”. Bikini is a soft minty green colour while Laguna is a sky blue beauty. All of the shades from the collection are stunning and would really compliment a holiday tan. They come in standard Barry M nail polish bottles however the range has on trend copper lids which adds a nice touch and sets them apart from the regular polishes. The polishes feature the relatively new rounded end flat brushes which makes application an absolute breeze even if you have short stubby nails like mine.

The bottle states that you should not use a basecoat to get the full benefit of the nourishing ingredients. I needed two coats for full opaque coverage and was pleasantly surprised by how quickly it dried! The polish was thicker than I expected but that had the added bonus of making the polish self levelling which leads to a streak free finish. I opted not to use a topcoat however you could add one if you choose. Both colours I tested applied smoothly and dried super shiny creating an almost gloss type finish. The polish is pretty chip resistant and lasted for quite a few days even without a topcoat. My nails do feel stronger and less brittle so I can definitely see more shades from this range entering my life in the future.

The Coconut Infusion range retails at £4.99 which is a little bit pricier than other Barry M polishes but the nourishing qualities packed into these shades makes that totally worth it. You can purchase all nine shades in Superdrug or Boot’s stores across the UK or on the Barry M website.

Reflection and Renewal

Happy new year to all you wonderful people. I hope you had a lovely new years eve doing whatever felt right for you. I really wasn’t in the mood for partying so I went round my Mum’s with Oli and we watched Comedy DVDs, ate pasta and watched the London fireworks at midnight on the BBC. It was a lovely and relaxed way to enter 2016.

I thought I would do a post reflecting on my promises to myself from last year as well as making 5 new ones for this year. I will link to last years post here if you want to go back and read it.

tumblr_nzzv4thazc1u2kwfpo1_1280

So last years promises;

1- I promise not to speak or think badly of my body.

I have totally succeeded in this area. I have been so much more body confident and have been working towards bettering it some more. I have taken way too many selfies and embraced the crop top in a big way. I even took a selfie in my bikini!

2- I promise to look after myself better.

Well this one is both a success and a failure. I have bee looking after my skin much better. I have been cleansing and moisturising almost everyday and slather myself in body butter after every shower. Exercising has been a bit of a fail. I mean I’ve been to the gym a few times and have been doing some yoga but not very consistently. Same with going to bed earlier. I did do well at this for about 7 weeks over the summer when I had a job but that stopped pretty much as soon as the job did.

3- I promise to blog at least 3 times a week.

As you will know already, I totally failed that! I think 3 times a week was a bit ambitious.

4- I promise to read at least 12 books.

Yeah another kind of fail. I mean I might have read about 12 books when you add up all the little bits here and there for uni and I did actually finally read The Art of Asking and it was amazing! Need to work harder at this because I used to be such a book worm.

5- I promise to keep myself organised.

In my opinion I actually did quite well at this. I got myself an amazing filofax style organiser in the middle of the year and have been really good at using it. There is still room for improvement though and I am going to keep this up because it really helps me stay a bit calmer and focused.

So all in all I think I did pretty well! Now on to next years promises;

1- Read at least 12 books.

Yes I know I know, this was one of my promises from last year but I didn’t achieve it and I really want to! I want to mostly read positive, inspirational books but I’m sure some others will sneak in there. I’m going to start with Radical Self Love by Gala Darling which I got way back in the summer and started reading but only got about a chapter in. I might even write little reviews when I finish them.

2- I promise to stop biting my nails and take good care of them.

A totally cliché one I know. I have been biting my nails for as long as I can remember and I feel it is time to stop. I have already started this but I really want to keep it up and not slide back into the habit. I want to be one of those women who always has beautiful nails with rainbow polish and little gems. I really want them to be in good enough condition so that I can treat myself to my first ever manicure.

3- I promise to put myself first.

That sounds kinda selfish I know but hear me out. I am terrible at putting myself first. So much so that if I’m ill and can’t go to a seminar I worry that the teacher will be upset, not annoyed, upset. I find it hard to speak up and do what I want to do or not do as the case may be. I always beat myself up when I need to have a mental health day and I feel like a failure when I need help. This year I want all of that to change. So far so good- I spent new years the way I wanted to even though all my friends were out partying and I have booked a doctors appointment for the 4th to finally address my anxiety and depression properly.

tumblr_nvppyti1tz1u2kwfpo1_1280

4- I promise to keep my positivity journal throughout the year.

I’ve ordered the Sprinke of Glitter 2016 diary (it should get here tomorrow) and I plan on using it as a positivity/gratitude journal. My Mum had the idea so I’m following suit. Every day I’m going to write down at least one positive thing or one thing I am grateful for. Hopefully that exercise will make even the darkest days seem better because there will always be at least one good thing. The diary has lots of fun little activities too so that will be fun to follow along with.

tumblr_nztd7fyajn1u2kwfpo1_1280

5- I promise to experiment more with food and start a recipe book.

Since going vegan 6 months ago I have been experimenting more with food but there’s still so many more  things I want to try. I also really want to start writing things down in some sort or recipe book or scrap book because I almost always tweak recipes to suit my tastes. Then I will have a great resource for not only myself but also Oli and my future children.

So there you go! I feel fresh and ready to tackle 2016. I am going to aim to blog twice a week but I’m making no promises. I hope you all have a lovely start to the year. If you have any promises/resolutions you want to share with me feel free to comment below.

Barry M Sunset Daylight Curing Nail Polish- Review

When I saw that Barry M had a new range of nail varnishes out I nipped down to Superdrug to buy some straight away. The new range is inspired by professional gel treatments however the magical daylight curing topcoat eliminates the need for a special light. Sounds pretty rad and much cheaper than getting a professional manicure at only £4.99 a bottle.

Currently (until early May) Superdrug has a three for two offer on all makeup including nail polishes to I treated my self to two different colours and the topcoat. Currently there’s only a base range of seven colours however I’m sure they will expand the range if they sell well. I went for “I’ve been Pinkin” and “Make me Teal” and boy to they look beautiful next to each other. I don’t have a photo to share with you right now but I currently have them on alternating nails and they look awesome. Before I move onto my experiences with the polishes I have to mention how lovely and sleek the rose-gold lids look, perfect for displaying on your dressing table.

First up we have “I’ve been Pinkin” which is an almost neon pink, totally up my street. The directions tell you there’s no need for a base coat so I didn’t bother and I haven’t noticed them leaving a stain so that’s a plus point. You are then instructed to apply 2 coats before applying the top coat- which apparently should only be used with these polishes (I have yet to test this). “I’ve been Pinkin” definitely needed two coats but then it was a perfect solid colour. The topcoat then magically perfects the colour, smoothing out everything, leaving it shiny and strong.

“Make me Teal” is a bright blue/teal shade and is my favourite of the two. After one coat this colour is pretty opaque however I did apply another coat just to be sure. Both colours lasted fairly well and maintained their glossy finish. The colours applied really well, partly due to the new flat brushes Barry M have introduced in their polishes. The topcoat was slightly thick but equally easy to apply. One thing I will point out to you all is that you don’t need daylight to cure these, any light will do. I’m not really sure how much they are affected by the light at all but they do look amazing so I’m not complaining!
